Title: Shannon's After-school Reading Exchange
(Some projects here are just to give you seed ideas and confidence as to what High School students can do. )
Shannon founded SHARE, a nonprofit organization to empower African girls through education. She actually traveled to Tanzania to teach English to the "SHARE girls" and open new afterschool reading rooms.
SHARE renovates deteriorated classrooms, creates school libraries, and employs teachers. During the school year Shannon gives presentations to mobilize students to hold fundraisers and book drives, enabling SHARE to ship tons of donated children's books and school supplies to Tanzania. Today 150 SHARE girls meet 6 times each week to become literate to help themselves out of poverty. Their motto: Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.
You don't have to travel to Africa to learn and serve! There's plenty of need near where you live and go to school. And a semester or year of service-learning certainly would give you time to plan a project well.
If you craft a service-learning project, make sure that learning is a big part of your plan.
